Shohei Ohtani’s former interpreter, Ippei Mizuhara, was recently dismissed from his Uber Eats delivery job, following reports of his involvement in illegal sports betting. This news comes just 24 hours after the New York Post published photos of Mizuhara delivering food in Los Angeles.
Mizuhara, who once worked closely with Ohtani, has experienced a dramatic fall from grace. From translating for one of the world’s most famous athletes to delivering food, his story is a stark contrast to his previous high-profile role.
According to NBC Los Angeles, Uber Eats terminated Mizuhara’s employment due to his pending litigation related to a massive illegal sports betting ring. “Mizuhara has been an Uber Eats courier for a few years. Given these recent charges, he no longer has access to the platform,” said Uber spokesperson Gabriela Condarco-Quesada.
Mizuhara’s activities went unnoticed despite his prominent connection with Ohtani since 2018, when Ohtani joined the Anaheim Angels. Mizuhara continued to work with Ohtani after his move to the Los Angeles Dodgers this past offseason.
Mizuhara’s legal troubles escalated after he pleaded guilty to multiple bank and tax fraud charges, admitting to stealing over $16 million from Ohtani. Prosecutors revealed that Mizuhara impersonated Ohtani to commit these thefts. His gambling losses totaled $183 million, despite winning $142 million. Mizuhara could face up to 30 years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for October.
