Dr. Anthony Fauci faced intense scrutiny on Capitol Hill today, with Republicans seizing the opportunity to question the former NIAID director on his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing highlighted deep partisan divides, as conservatives questioned Fauci’s decisions and ethics, while Democrats praised his service.

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) challenged Fauci on several points, with large printouts of her evidence, asking, “Do you represent science? Yes or no?” Greene criticized Fauci for his involvement in controversial experiments and questioned the morality and scientific basis of such practices. She accused the NIH of enriching its scientists with $710 million from drug makers, asking if he thought scientists and doctors be paid royalties off the backs of American taxpayers, especially when they are making up guidelines. Greene also criticized Fauci’s public appearances, highlighting his attendance at a national baseball game where he was seen without a mask and not social-distancing after throwing the first pitch.

Rep. Richard McCormick (R-TX), a physician who treated COVID-19 patients during the pandemic, expressed grievances about being censored on social media. He stated that many of his censored views were later validated, emphasizing the impact of silencing medical professionals. “You affected people’s ability to work, travel, be educated, to actually flourish… Shame on you.”

Rep. Michael Cloud (R-TX) questioned the efficacy of the COVID measures Fauci supported, including business, school, and church closures, stay-at-home orders, and vaccine mandates. Cloud argued that these measures disrupted lives, particularly in rural communities where cancer treatments and other services were affected. He pressed Fauci on why policy did not change as new data became available, particularly concerning the lab leak theory and natural immunity. Fauci admitted that some measures, such as the six-foot social distancing rule, “sort of just appeared,” prompting Cloud to question the scientific basis of such guidelines.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) questioned why Dr. Robert Redfield, the head of the CDC and a member of the COVID task force, was left off a critical call. Jordan noted that Redfield testified he was pushed out of the call because he was not critical of the lab leak theory. Jordan asked Fauci why it was so important that the virus did not start in a lab. Jordan ended with, “Well, it was important to someone in the Biden administration.”

The Republican representatives criticized the NIH’s grant approval process, accusing it of lacking accountability and transparency. They highlighted what they described as bureaucratic inefficiencies. In contrast, Democrats used their time to laud Fauci as an “American Hero,” showcasing the stark contrast in perceptions between the two sides of the aisle.
