At the 2024 Travelers Championship, golfers Scottie Scheffler and Tom Kim encountered an unexpected hurdle on the 72nd hole as a group of protesters disrupted the event by charging the green with smoke bombs. The police and security swiftly intervened, containing the situation and removing the protesters from the field of play, all while onlooking fans passionately voiced their support for the players using chants like “U-S-A” and “ass-hole.”

Despite the brief interruption and the remnants of white and red powder on the green, play continued as Scheffler, Kim, and Akshay Bhatia strived to finish their fourth rounds. Rules officials made the call to proceed with the game, ultimately allowing Scheffler to nail a birdie putt mere inches from the hole. Meanwhile, Kim, trailing by one stroke at the anticipated final hole, executed a crucial birdie to force a playoff with Scheffler, a seasoned five-time PGA Tour champion in the current season.

In response to the unforeseen circumstances, the PGA Tour made the decision to create a new hole for the playoff, beginning on the same 18th hole, to ensure a level playing field for all competitors and prevent any lingering debris from affecting the putting surface.
