A serial shoplifter who swiped 17 tubes of Pringles in a string of thefts quipped "once you pop, you can't stop" after being arrested.
Adam Spencer, a 40-year-old prolific thief, was apprehended by police in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, on Tuesday. During questioning, Spencer admitted to stealing numerous tins of the popular crisps, jokingly quoting the brand's slogan.
Spencer avoided jail time after admitting to two counts of burglary and three counts of theft at Nottingham Magistrates' Court on Wednesday. He received a six-month prison sentence, suspended for a year, and was ordered to pay £200 in compensation and complete a six-month drug rehabilitation program.
Police reported that the theft spree began at Tesco on Alfreton Road on April 11 and continued to Asda on Priestsic Road six days later. On May 2, Spencer broke into the back door of Iceland, also on Priestsic Road, stealing meat products. He returned two hours later to steal more than £300 worth of stock and revisited the store for another theft on May 19.

PC Dean Fenton of Nottinghamshire Police stated, "The actions of prolific thieves like Spencer can negatively impact communities, businesses, and people's livelihoods. Shoplifting isn't a victimless crime, as it can lead to higher prices for shoppers."
In a statement, the force explained that officers from the county priority tasking team were patrolling Sutton-in-Ashfield when they spotted Spencer. Realizing he was wanted for multiple burglaries and shop thefts, they attempted to arrest him on Lammas Road. Despite trying to flee on his bicycle, Spencer was quickly apprehended by the officers.
Spencer's crime spree included burglaries and thefts at various stores in Sutton-in-Ashfield, starting on April 11 at Tesco and targeting Asda and Iceland on April 17 and May 19. He admitted to taking 17 pots of Pringles during one of the thefts, humorously telling the police, "once you pop, you can't stop."
