Amid increasing concerns about Russian and Chinese aggression, NATO is considering [1] deploying more nuclear weapons. The alliance is having active consultations on how to be transparent about its nuclear arsenal and use this transparency as a deterrent.

NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg said they needed to take their weapons out of storage and place them on standby as they face increased threats from Russia and China.

NATO head Jens Stoltenberg, in a recent communication with British newspaper Telegraph, stated the need to consult on these issues by saying, “I won’t go into operational details about how many nuclear warheads should be operational and which should be stored, but we need to consult on these issues. That’s exactly what we’re doing, transparency helps to communicate the direct message that we, of course, are a nuclear alliance.”
While NATO allegedly aims to have a world without nuclear weapons, Stoltenberg stated, “As long as nuclear weapons exist, we will remain a nuclear alliance because a world where Russia, China, and North Korea have nuclear weapons, and NATO does not, is a more dangerous world.”
He added that nuclear weapons are the alliance’s “ultimate security guarantee” and a means to keep the peace.
Russia has repeatedly warned that it could use nuclear weapons to protect itself from aggression. It has accused the US and its European allies of pushing the world towards nuclear confrontation by providing Ukraine with billions of dollars of weapons, some of which are being used against Russian territories.
NATO, which is playing an active role in coordinating arms supplies to Kyiv, has rarely discussed weapons publicly. It is known that the US has deployed nuclear bombs to several locations in Europe.
