The Kremlin has directly accused the United States of orchestrating a missile attack on Crimea that resulted in four deaths and 151 injuries. Utilizing U.S.-supplied ATACMS missiles, the strike has prompted Moscow to issue a stern warning to the U.S. ambassador, hinting at imminent retaliation.

Russian officials claim this conflict with the West has reached a critical and dangerous phase. The direct accusation against the U.S. for the Crimea assault, an area Russia annexed in 2014, is a significant escalation. Posts to social media allegedly show the missile launch, another of the strike itself.

Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov pointed fingers at Western governments, saying, “Ask my colleagues in Europe and Washington why their policies are killing Russian children.” This statement follows reports that two children were among the casualties in Sevastopol, where chaotic scenes showed people fleeing the beach and the injured being evacuated.

While Kyiv has remained silent on this specific incident, it consistently denies targeting civilians. Moscow alleges that the U.S. provided both the weaponry and the intelligence necessary for the strike. In a move to escalate diplomatic tensions, the Russian Foreign Ministry summoned U.S. Ambassador Lynne Tracy, accusing Washington of actively participating in the conflict and waging a hybrid war against Russia. They warned of unavoidable retaliatory measures.

U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed sorrow over the civilian losses, maintaining that the U.S. supplies weapons to Ukraine for its self-defense, including Crimea. Pentagon spokesman Major Charlie Dietz emphasized that Ukraine independently makes its military decisions. An unnamed U.S. official clarified that the intended target was a military launcher, not civilians, and suggested that the civilian casualties were a result of Russian interception efforts.

President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly warned of the dangers of a wider war involving nuclear powers but insists that Russia does not seek conflict with NATO. President Joe Biden has reaffirmed that U.S. troops will not be sent to Ukraine, warning that a direct NATO-Russia clash would lead to World War III.

Putin portrays the Ukraine conflict as a struggle against American efforts to undermine Russia post-Soviet Union, claiming that the West aims to dismantle Russia and seize its resources. In contrast, Western leaders view the war as a defense against Russian expansionism. Both sides reject the other’s narrative of aggression and imperialism.

Despite U.S. restrictions on Ukraine using ATACMS to strike recognized Russian territories, the missiles’ extensive range remains a point of contention. In response to Western military aid to Ukraine, Putin has hinted at bolstering ties with North Korea and conducting nuclear weapon deployment drills.

When asked about Russia’s response to the Crimea strike, Peskov alluded to Putin’s earlier remarks on expanding Russia’s conventional weapons reach. He asserted that U.S. actions resulting in Russian civilian deaths would have serious consequences, though specifics were not provided.
