In a tragic and startling turn of events, a 22-year-old woman, Kayla Kenisha Brown, was facing murder, kidnapping, and carjacking charges following a disturbing carjacking incident in Washington D.C. on Monday that resulted in the death of a 55-year-old woman.

The unsettling chain of events began at 1:11 p.m. on Monday at Washington Hospital Center, according to a news release from the Metropolitan Police Department.

On that fateful afternoon, a woman parked a Mazda SUV in front of the hospital with her 55-year-old mother seated beside her in the passenger seat. The driver exited the vehicle momentarily to retrieve a wheelchair for her mother, leaving the engine running.

Brown, accompanied by her family, emerged from the hospital and seized the opportunity to hop into the unatten- ded Mazda SUV and drive off with the unsuspecting passenger still inside.

Merely 18 minutes later, the stolen vehicle careened into a building at 601 D Street, Northwest. Shockingly, the structure housed the Office of Attorney General for the District of Columbia and the Washington D.C. U.S. Attorney’s Office, as revealed by the Metropolitan Police Department to USA TODAY on Tuesday.

Attempting to abscond from the crash site, the suspect departed the vehicle but was promptly apprehended by a Metropolitan Police Department captain.

Brown now finds herself at the center of a legal maelstrom, charged with felony murder, kidnapping, and carjacking. The specifics of her legal representation remain unclear at this juncture.

Amidst ongoing investigations, authorities have announced that the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will conduct an autopsy to ascertain the cause and manner of Gaines’ untimely demise.
