WILMINGTON, Del. — In a historic verdict on Tuesday, Hunter Biden, the son of sitting President Joe Biden, was found guilty by a federal jury for lying about his drug use in order to purchase a firearm. This marked the first time a child of a sitting president has been convicted of a crime.

The jury, consisting of six men and six women, deliberated for three hours across two days before delivering a guilty verdict on multiple charges. The 54-year-old Hunter Biden was convicted of making a false statement in the purchase of a firearm, making a false statement related to information required by a federally licensed firearms dealer, and possession of a firearm by an unlawful user of a controlled substance.

Prosecutors from special counsel David Weiss’ office argued that Hunter Biden knowingly provided false information on a gun application form, claiming he did not use controlled substances, before purchasing a Colt Cobra .38-caliber revolver from a Wilmington shop on Oct. 12, 2018. Evidence presented during the trial included details from Hunter Biden’s 2021 memoir, where he admitted to being addicted to crack cocaine at the time of the firearm purchase.

Hunter Biden, who showed no visible reaction when the verdict was read, potentially faces up to 25 years in prison, although a lighter sentence is more likely due to his lack of prior convictions.

Despite this conviction, Hunter Biden’s legal troubles are far from over. He is scheduled to face a federal tax evasion case in Los Angeles federal court, with proceedings set to begin on Sept. 5. Prosecutors used a variety of evidence ranging from witness testimony to Hunter’s own communications and laptop data to establish his drug use at the time of the firearm purchase.

While the defense team, led by attorney Abbe Lowell, argued that Hunter Biden did not knowingly lie on the gun application form, claiming he was in a “deep state of denial” about his drug dependency, the prosecution successfully painted a picture of his drug use through various pieces of evidence.

The verdict in this case comes amidst mounting legal challenges for Hunter Biden, including the upcoming federal tax evasion trial. The detailed proceedings of the trial shed light on the complex legal issues surrounding the son of  Joe Biden.
