A gunman wounded in an exchange of fire with troops fired shots at the US Embassy in Lebanon on Wednesday, according to the Lebanese army. The attacker, a Syrian national, was later taken to the hospital for medical treatment, and nearby soldiers commenced an extensive search of the area.

The US Embassy confirmed that small arms fire was reported near its entrance, adding that the facility and staff were safe after the attack. However, according to a security source who spoke to Reuters, a member of the embassy's security team was injured during the attack.

The embassy is located north of Beirut in a highly secured zone with multiple checkpoints along the route to the entrance. It moved there after a suicide attack on the embassy in 1983 that claimed over 60 lives.

This isn't the first time that the US embassy has come under attack. In September, gunfire erupted near the embassy, but there was no report of casualties. In October, scores of protesters gathered outside the embassy to demonstrate during the early days of the Gaza war, and Lebanese security forces used tear gas and water cannons to repel them.

Recently, the conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has sparked in Lebanon, leading to a series of attacks. Tens of thousands of people on both sides of the Israel-Lebanon border have been displaced amid fears of deepening conflicts.
