Newly released body cam footage has shed light on the shootout that took place at a Kroger store in Ohio last month, leaving some questioning the actions of the officers involved. Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers stood by the officers’ actions, claiming they were justified in the face of a deadly threat.
The incident unfolded on May 29th at a Kroger in Colerain Township, where Officer Brian Huntington and Officer Jordan Meinking found themselves in a confrontation with a suspect identified as 42-year-old Joseph Van Niman. The chaos erupted as Van Niman, brandishing a firearm, defied officers’ orders and engaged in suspicious activity within the store premises.
The officers confronted Van Niman, unleashing a barrage of gunfire as the suspect retreated inside the store. Customers present at the scene found themselves caught in the crossfire, forced to take cover as the gunfight exchange unfolded.
Colerain Police Chief Edwin Cordie III stood behind his officers, proclaiming the use of lethal force as a justifiable measure given the grave threat posed by Van Niman’s armed actions. Powers commended the officers’ bravery in confronting danger head-on, emphasizing the potential catastrophe averted by their response.
The situation culminated as a third undercover officer inside the store joined the fray, leading to a final standoff that resulted in Van Niman sustaining a gunshot wound to the eye. Despite the chaos and the injuries sustained by one customer caught in the crossfire, Powers expressed relief at the outcome and the containment of the situation.
Van Niman, currently hospitalized due to his injuries, faces a 12-count indictment as he awaits his rendezvous with justice.
