A dramatic incident unfolded in Farrell on an early Friday morning in late May as a concealed-carry permit holder bravely came to the aid of a local police officer during a shootout. Mercer County District Attorney Peter C. Acker revealed that the individual, armed with a valid concealed-carry permit and a firearm, went to the officer’s location and fired at the suspect in an act of defense.

The events transpired around 12:30 a.m. outside a convenience store along Indiana Avenue in Farrell, prompting an ongoing investigation by state police and county district attorney’s office detectives. The suspect, identified as a 49-year-old Caucasian male, sustained life-threatening injuries and was undergoing treatment at Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown on Friday evening.

The confrontation erupted when a Farrell police officer encountered the armed individual and ascertained that he was carrying a weapon. Despite attempts to engage the suspect in cooperation and disarmament, the situation escalated as the individual initiated gunfire, prompting the officer and a bystander to respond in kind. Even after being wounded, the resistant suspect refused to surrender the weapon, leading to the use of non-lethal force in the form of bean-bag rounds by the officer, as well as the deployment of an armored personnel carrier provided by the Mercer County Critical Incident Response Team to neutralize the threat.

According to Acker, more than 40 bullets were exchanged, with the police officer firing about 12 or 13 bean-bag rounds during the confrontation. Concerning the handling of the situation, Acker emphasized the need for exercising caution when dealing with an armed individual who demonstrates a willingness to use their weapon.

Further complicating the night, the Indiana Avenue shooting took place shortly after an unrelated incident at a residence along Emerson Avenue in Farrell, which Acker described as a drug-related drive-by shooting, also under active investigation.

The state police’s investigation will address the specifics of the gunfire exchange that resulted in the initial suspect’s injuries and the potential legal ramifications if the 49-year-old individual survives. Acker emphasized the need for comprehensive investigation due to the presence of law enforcement and stray bullets in a residential area in the late hours, expressing concern over the impact on the community.
