In a significant development regarding the 2022 mass school shooting at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas, two individuals have been indicted. Former Uvalde School District Police Chief Pete Arredondo and former Uvalde School District police officer Adrian Gonzales face serious charges.
Pete Arredondo, who was released from custody after his indictment, has been charged with multiple counts of child endangerment. Uvalde County Sheriff Ruben Nolasco confirmed Arredondo’s booking into the county jail.
The second individual, Adrian Gonzales, is also facing felony indictment, as reported [1] by the San Antonio Express-News. However, Gonzales has not yet surrendered to the authorities and remains at large.
The horrific event on May 24, 2022, claimed the lives of 19 students and two teachers, marking it as the second-worst school shooting in American history. A damning report by the Justice Department earlier this year highlighted “critical failures” before, during, and after the shooting, noting significant deviations from established active-shooter protocols. The report stated children were left in the room with an active shooter for over an hour before police intervened.
Uvalde District Attorney Christina Mitchell initiated a criminal investigation into the law enforcement response shortly after the shooting. In January, a grand jury was convened to review evidence against numerous officers, leading to the recent indictments.
