The National Association of Broadcasters (NAB) has recently made the decision to revoke an award intended for actor Robert De Niro following his vitriolic tirade directed at former President Donald Trump.
De Niro’s controversial outburst occurred at a press conference organized by the Biden campaign outside the Manhattan Criminal Courthouse, where Trump’s business records trial was being held. During the event, De Niro launched into a scathing diatribe, expressing his vehement belief that the United States government would face dire consequences if Trump were to secure reelection. He also vehemently denounced Trump supporters as “clowns” and “gangsters,” engaging in a heated confrontation with those protesting the press conference.

In response to De Niro’s inflammatory remarks, the NAB articulated that “Mr. De Niro’s recent high-profile activities will create a distraction from the philanthropic work” that the organization aimed to spotlight. A representative, as reported by the Hill, highlighted the event’s bipartisan nature and emphasized its purpose in uniting individuals from various political backgrounds to honor the influential contributions of local broadcasters and partners. Despite affirming the right to free speech and civic engagement, the spokesperson indicated that De Niro’s contentious actions would detract from the event’s focus on service and consequently announced the actor’s withdrawal from the upcoming ceremony.
Scheduled to receive the NAB Leadership Foundation’s Service to America Award at the NAB’s event in Washington, D.C. on June 4, 2024, De Niro’s remonstration drew swift critique from former President Trump. In a statement, Trump rebuked De Niro, attributing a decline in the actor’s “movies, artistry, and brand” to his foray into the political realm at the behest of “Crooked Joe Biden.” Trump further disparaged De Niro’s appearance at the press conference, characterizing it as “pathetic and sad.”
