In a Sunday night statement, U.S. Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee of Houston announced that she is battling pancreatic cancer. The 74-year-old Congresswoman has been representing Texas' 18th congressional district for 30 years.

"My doctors have confirmed my diagnosis for pancreatic cancer," said Jackson Lee while emphasizing that she is undergoing treatment and fighting it aggressively. "I am confident that my doctors have developed the best possible plan to target my specific disease," she continued. Undoubtedly, Jackson Lee becomes another American combating this devastating disease that strikes thousands each year.

"I stand in faith that God will strengthen me. The road ahead will not be easy, but I am committed to serving this nation and being present for votes on legislation that is critical for the prosperity and security of the American people," said Jackson Lee.

Jackson Lee reassured her constituents about her absence, saying that while she will likely be occasionally absent from Congress as she undergoes treatment, she will continue to work with the Congressional Leadership, including Leader Hakeem Jeffries and the Speaker of House, to deliver the constituent services Texans “deserve and expect.”

Jackson Lee was previously diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011 and won the fight against the disease in 2012.

In her statement, Jackson Lee gave a heartfelt message to her constituency, concluding, "Please keep me and my family in your prayers as you have always done. Know that you will remain in mine. As always, God bless you and God bless the United States of America."

As the Congresswoman wages this fight with pancreatic cancer, she hopes for strength and courage while putting her faith in God.
