BRICS Bloc Gears Up for Expansion: Two New Countries Look To Join The Economic Alliance

As the annual summit of the BRICS bloc approaches, two new countries have entered the fray, eager to bolster their economic ties within the alliance. Malaysia and Thailand, intent on expanding their global reach, have declared their intentions to join the collective.

With the impending summit poised to accommodate fresh faces, the bloc aims to build upon its existing roster of nine nations. Notably, last year’s event marked the inclusion of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Egypt, Ethiopia, and Iran, marking a significant milestone in the bloc’s expansion efforts since 2001. This year, the trend of growth and inclusivity is slated to continue.

In an era of rapidly evolving geopolitical dynamics, the BRICS alliance has solidified its standing as a key player in the global arena. Through strategic expansion and a gradual shift towards de-dollarization, the alliance endeavors to reshape the landscape of international finance, advocating for a multipolar world characterized by robust participation and healthy competition.

The recent developments signify a pivotal moment for the BRICS bloc, with both Malaysia and Thailand eagerly stepping up to join the economic alliance. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim of Malaysia confirmed the submission of a formal request to join the grouping, emphasizing the positive strides taken towards this goal.

“We have made a decision (on the matter). We will start going through the official procedures soon,” Ibrahim disclosed, as reported by Russia State News, expressing optimism about the outcome and awaiting feedback from the South African Government.

Joining Malaysia on this journey is Thailand, another nation eyeing membership in the alliance come 2024. With its sights set on becoming the first Southeast Asian member of the BRICS, Thailand has also voiced its desire to align itself with the bloc’s vision. Notably, reports indicate a substantial interest from over 30 nations seeking to join the alliance, underscoring the bloc’s growing global appeal.

As anticipation mounts for the upcoming expansion, speculation is rife regarding the number of nations that will be welcomed into the fold this year. The deliberations around new additions to the alliance promise to shed light on the BRICS bloc’s strategic agenda and its envisioned trajectory in the foreseeable future.
