On Wednesday morning, three Ogle County deputies were injured in a shooting in the small town of Dixon, Illinois. The incident unfolded in the gated community of Lost Nation, located about 90 miles west of Chicago. The deputies were responding to a welfare call when a suspect opened fire on them. The deputies returned fire, wounding the shooter. Sheriff Brian VanVickle confirmed [1] that all involved are expected to survive their injuries.

The crisis began at 8:30 a.m. when a family member informed authorities about an individual who had made threats of both suicide and homicide. Despite making over 50 attempts to contact the residents, the authorities received no response. By 11:51 a.m., the emergency response team decided to enter the house to check on the individual’s well-being. As soon as they entered, the deputies were met with gunfire, injuring three of them.

The suspect has been identified as Jonathon G. Gounaris. Armed with multiple guns, a fixed-blade knife, pepper spray, and ballistic armor, Gounaris immediately opened fire upon the deputies’ entry. One deputy was shot in their armor, another in the upper arm, and the third in the face. The deputies returned fire, striking Gounaris. All injured parties were taken to local hospitals, with two deputies later released and the third undergoing surgery at OSF St. Anthony’s Hospital. Gounaris also underwent surgery.

The Ogle County State’s Attorney’s Office is currently determining the charges to be filed against Gounaris as the investigation continues.
