At the 66th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in North Carolina, a fishing crew made headlines by catching a prize-worthy marlin. The team aboard the Hatteras-based boat "Release" reeled in a massive 504-pound blue marlin, securing a staggering $1.7 million prize.

 

Led by Captain Rom Whitaker, the crew achieved this remarkable feat after 22 years of participating in the tournament without previously boating a marlin. Blue marlins, found in the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, typically range from 11 feet in length and weigh between 200 to 400 pounds, as noted by National Geographic. This particular marlin exceeded the average, showcasing the team's exceptional skill and perseverance.

 

The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the largest non-profit billfish tournament globally, saw a record-breaking 302 fishing boats set sail on Monday. The event's charitable arm, The Big Rock Foundation, has contributed over $10 million to various organizations since its inception in 1986, with annual donations exceeding a million dollars in recent years.
