At the 66th Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament in North Carolina, a fishing crew made headlines by catching a prize-worthy marlin. The team aboard the Hatteras-based boat "Release" reeled in a massive 504-pound blue marlin, securing a staggering $1.7 million prize.

 

Led by Captain Rom Whitaker, the crew achieved this remarkable feat after 22 years of participating in the tournament without previously boating a marlin. The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament, the largest non-profit billfish tournament globally, saw a record-breaking 302 fishing boats set sail on Monday. The event's charitable arm, The Big Rock Foundation, has contributed over $10 million to various organizations since its inception in 1986, with annual donations exceeding a million dollars in recent years.
