The Big 12 Conference is on the brink of securing a substantial financial boost for its 16 member schools. If the conference successfully sells its naming rights and partners with private equity investors, it could see an infusion of $1 billion.

And while some will debate whether selling the naming rights to the conference is a wise move or not, everyone will likely weigh in a new controversial list published by Barstool Sports.

In a recent article Barstool Sports shared a list of college football programs that they deem to be blue blood programs. And while the list includes three former Big 12 schools, it omitted any current members of the conference leaving Big 12 loyalists frustrated.

So who did Barstool list? You can see the list of who they believe our the nation’s blue blood programs below:

• Ohio State
• Michigan
• Texas (former Big 12 school)
• Oklahoma (former Big 12 school)
• Alabama
• USC
• Notre Dame
• Nebraska (former Big 12 school)

After mentioning the list, Barstool commentary added, “If you disagree with this list you just don’t know ball.” It is noteworthy that no Big 12 team has won a national championship since Texas achieved the feat in 2005.

Texas and Oklahoma, former Big 12 powerhouses, are now in their first year with the SEC after departing the Big 12 at the end of the 2023-24 school year. Nebraska left the Big 12 for the Big Ten back in 2010.

Finally, while people will debate the list and who belongs on it, it’s important to understand that not being labeled a “blue blood” does not imply you are not a successful program. Rather it just means you may not have the tradition associated with your program that the above schools do.
