Austin Butler addressed rumors about playing a young Val Kilmer in the highly anticipated ‘Heat 2.’ Speaking with ET’s Nischelle Turner on Monday at the premiere of his new film, The Bikeriders, the 32-year-old actor expressed his admiration for Michael Mann, the director of the original 1995 film.
“I love Michael Mann,” Butler told ET, though he remained tight-lipped on the specifics. “I have a canned answer that I’ve been saying for this. I love Michael Mann, I love the first film, I love Val Kilmer. He’s an incredible filmmaker.”
Reports emerged in May suggesting Butler might take on the role of Chris Shiherlis, originally played by Kilmer, in the upcoming sequel. Another rumored cast member is Adam Driver, possibly taking on the role of Neil McCauley, initially portrayed by Robert De Niro.

Butler, who earned an Oscar nomination for his role as Elvis Presley in Baz Luhrmann’s biopic, is currently a favorite among fans. His performance in Masters of the Air was also outstanding and he made an appearance in one of the year’s biggest blockbusters Dune Part Two as well.
Currently, Butler is focused on The Bikeriders, co-starring Jodie Comer, Tom Hardy, and Mike Faist. During the interview, Butler reacted to Hardy expressing a desire to work with him again.
“He said that?” Butler responded, surprised. “I feel that way about a lot of people. Definitely Tom, Jodie – everyone in this film. I just got to tell Mike Faist what a great job he did in Challengers.”
Butler added, “I’ve been very lucky to work with some fantastic people.”
