Attempted Mass Murder In Madison: ‘A Miracle No One Is Dead’ – Police Chief [VIDEO]

MADISON, Wis. – A shooting incident at an overnight party on the rooftop of an apartment building in downtown Madison, Wisconsin, resulted in at least 10 people sustaining injuries, as confirmed by the local police. Among the victims were some as young as 14 years old, all of whom are now recovering from non-life-threatening injuries. Authorities are seeking the cooperation of the public to provide any information or videos that could aid in identifying a suspect.

During a press conference on Sunday morning, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes remarked, “It is truly a miracle that no one is dead.” The sequence of events unfolded when officers responded to an incident believed to be a high school graduation party at The Lux apartments on West Johnson Street around 12:45 a.m. A teenager with multiple gunshot wounds was found bleeding in the street, prompting police to swiftly enter the Johnson Street apartment building.

“Officers watched as dozens of people rushed out of the building, running in panic and tripping over one another, simply trying to find safety,” Barnes described the chaotic scene.

Upon reaching the party on the rooftop, police encountered a distressing spectacle, estimating that there were several hundred individuals present. While the shooting transpired near the University of Wisconsin-Madison campus, university officials confirmed that no students were involved in the incident.

The victims, aged between 14 and 23, included high school students and young adults. Of the injured, nine sustained gunshot wounds or bullet grazes, while one person was injured by broken glass at the scene, Barnes disclosed. “These students should have been celebrating summer vacation and not receiving medical treatment,” he expressed to reporters.

The Madison Fire Department reported transporting five people with gunshot wounds to the hospital by ambulance while additional victims sought medical care independently. The department’s statement mentioned that four ambulances and two engine companies were involved in providing immediate medical assistance at the scene.

About 10 shell casings were recovered at the crime scene, prompting authorities to review footage from the apartment and public cameras in an effort to reconstruct the events. With no identified motive or suspects, the police urge individuals with recordings of the incident to come forward.

“Whenever there’s someone who’s fired a gun indiscriminately like this, there’s always a threat to the community,” Barnes emphasized. “We’re going to work to ensure that whoever is responsible for this is brought to justice, but we can only do that with the help of our community.”

Earlier in the year, the Madison police and fire departments had conducted joint training for such scenarios, Barnes mentioned, stating, “However, we didn’t expect to put it into practice so soon.”

Alder Mike Verveer, representing downtown in Madison’s Common Council, noted the presence of multiple law enforcement agencies at the scene when he arrived. “I was absolutely horrified…I never would have guessed that it was something as horrific as what I heard was potentially the case, which was a mass shooting,” Verveer shared.

The aftermath of this incident has prompted a community response, with local authorities and officials emphasizing the need for swift justice and collective vigilance to prevent such tragedies from occurring again.
