At approximately 2 a.m. this morning, Gila River Public Safety Dispatch received an emergency call regarding a disturbance at a home in Santan, District 4 of the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona. Officers from the Gila River Police Department (GRPD) responded to the scene.

As the officers attempted to manage the disturbance involving a large crowd, multiple gunshots were fired. Two GRPD officers and four individuals were struck by gunfire. The injured officers and individuals were immediately transported to local hospitals.

Tragically, one of the GRPD officers, identified as Officer Joshua Briese, died from his injuries. Officer Briese had been with the department for less than a year and was still undergoing Field Training. The second injured officer remains in serious but stable condition. At least one other individual involved in the incident has also been pronounced dead. All the injured are currently receiving treatment at area hospitals.

The Gila River Police Department expressed deep sorrow over the loss. "Our hearts and prayers are with these police officers, their families, and everyone impacted by this tragic incident," stated a spokesperson.
