In a surprising turn of events, the FBI conducted raids on several properties associated with Hinds County District Attorney Jody Owens, a Democrat. The searches took place on Wednesday at Owens’ district attorney’s office as well as the Downtown Cigar Company, a tobacco shop and lounge in Jackson that Owens owns.

The reasons behind these searches have not been disclosed by officials, leaving many speculating about the nature of the investigation. According to FBI spokesman Marshay Lawson, federal search warrants were executed at multiple locations. However, the affidavit supporting these warrants has been sealed by the court, preventing further details from being revealed. Despite the raids, the authorities have stated that there is no threat to public safety.

The Hinds County District Attorney’s Office released a statement asserting its full cooperation with the ongoing probe. They also emphasized that despite the circumstances, they remain fully functional and committed to serving the citizens of Hinds County.

Jody Owens was elected as the Hinds County District Attorney in 2019 and was re-elected in 2023. However, prior to these recent events, he faced controversy in 2022 when he was accused of threatening an individual with a firearm inside the apartment of his chief of staff, Samantha Grant. Furthermore, accusations were made regarding a romantic relationship between Owens and Grant. All allegations against Owens have been vehemently denied.

It is worth noting that Jody Owens ran on a platform that advocated for alternatives to incarceration, a stance that received support from George Soros, who provided funding for his campaign. However, despite these progressive promises, Owens presided over a concerning increase in murder rates in Jackson, with 2021 witnessing a record-high number of homicides, as reported by CNN.
