A courageous young man, Petrit Alijaj, 23, exhibited immense bravery when he shielded his fiancée during a horrific incident on the subway in New York City. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, left Alijaj with severe burns on 30 percent of his body, as he recounted the harrowing ordeal from his hospital bed at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Hospital.

Alijaj, still in shock from the random assault, revealed that he was on the No. 1 train with his fiancée and cousin, en route to visit the Statue of Liberty, when the assailant, later identified as 49-year-old Nile Taylor, boarded the train at the Varick Street station in lower Manhattan. Describing the assailant’s actions, Alijaj pointed to a cup on his bedside table, explaining that Taylor had a cup containing a flammable liquid, which he ignited and then hurled at passengers.

During the chaos, Alijaj displayed exceptional courage by turning his body to protect his fiancée and cousin, resulting in him sustaining severe burns as his shirt caught fire. Despite the agony, Alijaj valiantly tried to extinguish the flames by slapping himself while fleeing the train, ultimately shedding his burning shirt.

Alijaj, originally from Albania and residing in New York for about a year, expressed his gratitude that his face was unscathed, but he still faces a lengthy recovery, anticipating at least a week in the hospital. The victim was also optimistic about the extent of his burns, hoping it may be closer to 10 percent rather than the initial assessment of 30 percent.

Following this appalling incident, the perpetrator, Nile Taylor, was swiftly apprehended by law enforcement. Notably, this attack marked the second instance in four months where an individual had thrown flaming liquid at a subway passenger, prompting an investigation into whether Taylor was also responsible for the prior incident.

This act of bravery amidst tragedy serves as a poignant reminder of the selfless sacrifices individuals are willing to make to protect their loved ones, even in the face of profound danger.
