Florida law enforcement officials have taken action following a chaotic incident outside a Brandon skating rink on Saturday night.
The Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from an off-duty deputy at Astro Skate around 9:20 p.m., seeking assistance with a large crowd engaged in a parking lot brawl.
Investigations revealed that the altercation stemmed from the cancellation of a planned party at the venue due to the failure of the party hosts to hire an off-duty deputy, as mandated by Astro Skate. Subsequently, the event was called off, and the organizers were refunded.
Subsequent to learning about the cancellation, the group turned to social media to summon friends and acquaintances to assemble at the location and protest against the establishment and law enforcement officials.
Deputies encountered a sizeable crowd of 300-400 people in the skating rink’s parking lot and surrounding businesses.
While instructing the crowd to depart, it became apparent that their trespassing was not heeded, resulting in further altercations and property damage.
During the upheaval, one group reportedly attacked a juvenile inside a nearby barber shop, causing serious physical harm before the victim was taken to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Another group vandalized a convenience store, causing damage to property and stealing items.
In response, the sheriff’s office detained 23 juveniles, who were subsequently taken to the juvenile assessment center, and six adults, who were booked into the Orient Road Jail.
